Patti Labelle's Barbecue Sauce

1 tablespoon of vegetable oil
1 garlic clove, minced
1 - 14 ounce bottle of ketchup
2 tablespoons of light brown sugar
2 tablespoons of yellow mustard
2 tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce
2 tablespoons of cider vinegar
1 tablespoon of hot red pepper sauce
1 tablespoon of fresh lemon juice
1/4 teaspoon of ground hot red pepper
1/2 teaspoon of liquid smoke

Heat the oil in a medium, heavy bottomed saucepan over medium heat. Add the garlic and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 1 minute. Stir in the ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, vinegar, hot pepper sauce, lemon juice and ground red pepper. Bring to a simmer, stirring. Reduce the heat to low. Cook at a simmer, stirring often to avoid scorching, about 15 minutes. Remove from the heat and stir in the liquid smoke. Use immediately or cool completely, cover and refrigerate for up to 5 days.
